Paper Backup Verification System
A four-stage ritual we teach across courses: know what you hold, prove it still matches, write the evidence down, and rehearse recovery before you need it.
1. Inventory with ownership
Every sealed pack gets an ID, location, custodian, and “opens with” rule. Ambiguous ownership is the most common reason re-checks never happen.
2. Compare against a source
Verification means matching paper against an agreed source artifact — a digital export, a prior signed copy, or a dual-control witness sheet — not merely confirming the envelope still exists.
3. Log without theater
We favor short logs: date, pack ID, pages checked, mismatches, initials. Fancy dashboards are optional; a filed paper log next to the cabinet often outlives them.
4. Rehearse recovery
Quarterly dry runs confirm that people can locate, open, and reconstruct from the backup under time pressure. Finding gaps during rehearsal is success, not failure.
